Cecilio Garza is recognized not only as a driving force in shaping Tejano music through his work as a songwriter, composer, recording artist and bandleader, but also as a pioneering educator who helped introduce conjunto music into the South Texas public school system, where it now flourishes across the Rio Grande Valley. positive impact and create a better future for all.

Born and raised in Peñitas, a small town in the Rio Grande Valley, Garza’s love for music was nurtured early by his parents, especially his mother, a talented piano player. By high school, he was already performing with one of the pioneering Tejano bands. Over the course of his career, he wrote enduring Tejano classics including “El Muchacho Alegre,” “El Poderoso,” “Soy Tuyo” and “Palomita Encantadora,” along with dozens of other songs that have helped define the genre. His work has been recorded by Tejano greats such as Ruben Ramos, David Lee Garza, Johnny Rodriguez, Chente Barrera, and El Charro Negro and the Tortilla Factory.

Throughout the 1970s, Garza recorded on regional Texas labels including Uniko Records, Falcon Records and Freddie Records, while touring across the United States. In the mid-1980s, he collaborated with Tejano music pioneer Dan Segura and the Segura brothers in Houston. He also recorded Tejano Power Jam with Ramiro “Snowball” De la Cruz and accordionist Joe Escalante, featuring the hit songs “El Palomito” and “Alma Rendida.”

In 2005, Garza was inducted into the Tejano Roots Hall of Fame for his contributions as a singer, songwriter and bandleader. He was later honored by the Brownsville Music Legacy Awards in 2021 and nominated by Texas Folklife as a candidate for the National Endowment for the Arts Heritage Fellowship, representing the state of Texas.

Since retiring from education in 2021, Garza has returned to his roots as a songwriter and performer. Now signed to Tejano Powerhouse Records in the Rio Grande Valley, he continues releasing new music with producer Chris Rodriguez. His recent singles—“Mi Lotería,” “Celoso” and “Sabor de Engaño”—are receiving airplay on radio and online stations across California, Texas and northern Mexico. His most recent release, an updated version of “El Muchacho Alegre” which will be out January 2026, will bring a complete album closer to fruition for the year 2026 as well.

The fire in his heart for La Onda Tejana still burns brightly, ready to be shared with all who appreciate his música alegre style.
